Siding, Roofing, Windows & Decks for Nooksack Homes

Nooksack sits in the stretch of Whatcom County where the weather doesn't do anything halfway. Winters bring long stretches of driving rain pushed in off the Salish Sea, and even on the calmer days there's enough moisture in the air to keep moss and algae working year-round on anything that holds water. Add in the salt-tinged air that reaches inland across this part of the county, and you've got a climate that's genuinely hard on exterior building materials. We've built our business around understanding exactly how that combination wears down a house, and around installing products that are actually engineered to take it.

What the Climate Does to a House Here

Most of the siding problems we see in this part of Whatcom County aren't dramatic failures — they're slow, cumulative damage that homeowners don't notice until it's expensive. A few patterns show up again and again:

  • Moisture intrusion at seams and butt joints. Driving rain doesn't just fall straight down here — wind pushes it sideways into laps, corners, and trim, and any siding product that isn't dimensionally stable or properly sealed will eventually let water behind it.
  • Moss and algae growth. Shaded north walls, tree cover, and the region's long damp season give organic growth exactly what it needs. Wood-based and wood-fiber sidings absorb moisture and feed that growth; the surface degrades faster once it takes hold.
  • Paint and finish failure. Field-applied paint on wood or composite siding has a shorter real-world lifespan out here than manufacturers' brochures suggest. Constant wet-dry cycling breaks the bond faster than it would in a drier climate.
  • Corrosion and salt exposure on fasteners and trim. Salt-influenced air accelerates rust on lower-grade fasteners and metal components, which is one more reason installation details matter as much as the siding material itself.

Why We Only Install James Hardie Fiber Cement

We made a decision a while back to stop installing several products that are common in this market — vinyl, LP SmartSide, primed spruce, cedar, and other fiber cement brands like Cemplank and Allura. That wasn't a marketing decision; it was a response to what we kept seeing in the field, especially on homes exposed to conditions like Nooksack's.

Vinyl siding is inexpensive and low-maintenance in mild climates, but it can warp or become brittle with temperature swings, and it doesn't hold up structurally the way fiber cement does under wind-driven rain. Wood-based products like cedar and primed spruce look great initially, but they require real upkeep — repainting, caulking, and moisture monitoring — and in a climate with this much sustained dampness, that upkeep schedule gets demanding fast. LP SmartSide is an engineered wood product, which means it's still wood at its core and still vulnerable to moisture if the factory coating is ever compromised at a cut edge or fastener point. Other fiber cement brands aren't necessarily poor products, but we haven't found the same combination of factory finish quality, climate-specific engineering, and warranty backing that we get with James Hardie.

James Hardie fiber cement is non-combustible, doesn't swell or rot when it gets wet, and holds paint and color far longer than wood-based alternatives because the ColorPlus finish is baked on at the factory under controlled conditions — not brushed on in the field where weather affects the cure. Hardie also engineers specific product lines (their HZ5 line, for this climate zone) for regions that see exactly what Nooksack sees: sustained moisture, temperature swings, and coastal-influenced air. That's not a coincidence — it's a materials-engineering response to real Pacific Northwest conditions.

What Correct Installation Looks Like

A good product installed wrong still fails. On every Hardie project we run proper flashing and water-resistive barrier detailing behind the siding, correct fastener spacing and type, and manufacturer-specified clearances at grade, decks, and roof lines — the exact places where we see moisture problems start on older homes in this area. Warranty coverage from James Hardie depends on installation to their specification, so we treat those details as non-negotiable, not optional.

Beyond Siding: A Full Exterior Approach

Siding rarely fails in isolation out here — it's usually connected to what's happening with the roof, windows, or decking. We handle all four:

  • Roofing — a roof that's shedding water properly protects the siding and trim below it; a compromised roof accelerates siding problems.
  • Windows — window flashing and siding integration is one of the most common failure points we find on older homes; we address both together.
  • Decks — exposed to the same rain and moss pressure as siding, decks need materials and detailing suited to sustained Northwest moisture.

Looking at the whole exterior as one system, rather than patching one component at a time, is how you actually get ahead of Whatcom County's weather instead of chasing it.

A Local Crew That Knows Nooksack's Conditions

We work throughout Custer and the surrounding Whatcom County communities, and that regional experience matters. A crew that installs siding across a range of climates might not weigh flashing details, drainage planes, or product selection the same way we do for homes that face this much sustained moisture and moss pressure. We show up knowing what this weather does to a house, because we see it every week.

If you're noticing moss buildup, paint failure, soft spots, or just want an honest read on your home's exterior, we're happy to take a look. Reach out for a free, no-pressure estimate — we'll walk the exterior with you and tell you straight what we see.
